Places to See

Our cabin is the perfect base for exploring the Lot, a region where time slows down, and authentic France comes to life. Less crowded than the neighbouring Dordogne, it is a land of wild limestone plateaux, hidden valleys, and quiet, golden-stone hamlets.

Rocamadour:

A breathtaking “vertical village” built into a cliffside overlooking the Alzou canyon. It is a famous medieval pilgrimage site featuring the Sanctuary of the Black Virgin and a 14th-century castle.

Cahors

The capital of Lot, known for the Pont Valentré (a 14th-century fortified bridge and UNESCO site) and its historic old town. The town’s medieval core includes the Saint-Étienne Cathedral with its Romanesque domes. This is my favourite Saturday morning coffee destination.

Pech Merle

Renowned for authentic prehistoric paintings dating back over 20,000 years, including mammoths and human handprints.

Gourdon

This is a “local” gem and just a quick 19km hop from your cabin. It’s a stunning honey-stone hilltop town that’s managed to stay wonderfully authentic and lived-in.

Why you’ll love it:

  • The “Top of the World” View: It’s a short, charming climb through medieval alleys to the hilltop Esplanade. The 360-degree view over the countryside is the perfect spot to get your bearings.
  • Market Mornings: If you’re there on a Saturday, the local market is a must. Grab some local walnuts and Rocamadour cheese to take back to the cabin.
  • Gourdon is also where the nearest Supermarket is.

Gouffre de Padirac

A massive chasm leading to an underground river that you can explore by boat; it is considered one of France’s most extraordinary geological sites.
